On Films

I must be out of my Vulcan mind to be this fanatical about a movie. But let me tell you… Star trek is THE movie to watch. I am now a Spock-convert whole and whole. (Zachary Quinto is so Vulcan handsome with his pointy ears!)

All I need to do now is to devoid myself of emotions, think logically and calculate all risks scientifically. Feel not- Fall not- Tear not. I must admit that I think I am in a conflicted state currently because I don’t know what the hell I am typing. Hurhurhurhur.

One thing is for sure, I am officially crazy over Spock and his mind-blowing Vulcan logic now.

With the Film Festival coming to a close yesterday, I managed to squeeze in just one film amidst my pathetic-lack-of-a-life. It’s a Japanese film about a family who came together in an annual affair to mourn the death of the eldest son who died saving a drowning boy some fifteen years back. I felt that it was a matter-of-fact kind of film where it depicts the general family unity as well as division. Lots of family secrets and gossips were cleverly weaved into the dialogues in a light tone.

This film reminds me of my own family – where gossips behind others’ backs can be likened to breathing, and of course the need to credit the speedy diffusion of gossips and secrets. I would like to think that none of the gossips are malicious in nature because at the heart of it all, I guess my family is still a very united one.

The irony is apparent, isn’t it? Perhaps like a mirror reflection of the film – gossips keep us tight as a family. I don’t know really. Such is the paradox of family.

Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I’ve got is your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?

Love one’s daughter
Allow me that
And I can’t let go of your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?

Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I’ve got is your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?

Cold water by Damien Rice in ‘I am David’ the movie.

Natalie Portman was astounding and brilliant as usual and yes, she was the main reason for watching the show. It was refreshing to watch Scarlett Johansson as well. I haven’t caught any movie she was casted in since ‘Match Point’, which I did so only when I had nothing to do when I was at Banyan Tree. The character of Mary Boleyn though was really admirable. I only wished I had half her strength.

I really enjoy Saturdays when it’s all about catching film after film after film. Today was one of those Saturdays. Well.. not exactly Film. Film. Film.
But more of Film. Gallery. Film.

It was already in the plan to catch ‘In The Name of God’ at Lido. The unforgiving front row aside (neck- strains, sprains and all), I must say that I found the film brilliant. It latches on to your emotions as it builds up right from the beginning and it offers an insight on the struggles between modernity, religion, and one’s perception of both. My eyes welled up with tears towards the end and I found myself questioning the society that we live in. Are we truly blessed or are we simply ignorant?
